Mala Noche

Mala Noche (1985)
Seen on the 24th April 2010 (78 min)

A film about young gay love in Portaland in the mid 1980's. A white, openly gay young man falls for a Mexican illigal inmigrant. The clash of civilizations can not be more evident in the film, yet love and good will smooth the relationship between these two caracthers. What is interesting is that in the end, the white boy does not achieve his open intensions of beding Johny but instead succeeds in beding Pepper who seems to enjoy this at a subconscious level.

To me, the way these two Mexican young boys experienced in the US at that time, sums up many of the traditions and cultural suppositions of Mexico of the past two decades. Their dreams come to an end by their illigal status, their understanding of love, homosexuality and a society which is way beyond their day to day experience. Pepper in particular is an interesting character, seeking love, companionship and security in the arms of the white boy yet utterly dennying the homosexual nature of this relationship. Johny keeps his aloof and distant nature throught the film, conforming to stereotypes of the macho boy from Mexico.
