XXY (2007)
Seen on the 6th December 2010 (86 min)
A film about exploration of identity in the face of having (literally) preference for both sexes. It is a film about what it means to be a man and what it is not to be a man. It also explores the relation between two neighbouring countries: Uruguay and Argentina and the differences in thinking and behaving. There are some unexpected moments in the film and it really puts one to think about the nature of choice, gender and the meaning of life as a free, independent and no judgeamental person.

Harry Potter and the Deadly Hallows (1st part)
Harry Potter and the Deadly Hallows (1st part)
Seen on the 4th December 2010 (146 min)
This is by far the best part of the Potter series. It is about running away from the situation, it's a road movie and it should be seen like this. Harry and his friends are facing for the first time the sometimes terrible task of making their own choices and facing the consequences of this all. Ron gets really frustrated about this (trying to find in Harry an answer to all his problems) but then he comes back. The figure of Dumbledore is always in the background overseeing everything and supporting Harry's decisions. Voldemort is close than every but also distant, the end is in sight.

A film about luck and lack of love. A group of aficionados get together every now and again to trade with luck. A serious bet is expected by all assistants and the winner takes it all. Tomás had a lucky scape from a plane crash being the only survivor, and Federico, now working for an insurance company, makes sure to bring him into the game. Federico, however, has an ultimate objective, to take personal revenge to Samuel, a mythical figure who has survived to Russian roulette for over 30 years. Tomas and Federico find it harder to achieve this objective and Anna is a constant figure in the film. Does Tomás love Anna enough to make him the luckiest or the unluckiest person on the Planet? Interesting film.

The Counterfeiters
The Counterfeiters (2007)
Seen on the 19th September 2010 (98 min)
A film about survival in uncertain times: is it better to keep one's life helping the enemy, or die to sabotage the enemy? A film about who the enemy is (sometimes the enemy is within) and what freedom means in war time. A person (a jew) who never identified himself as one, ends up in a gild of counterfeiters selected by the Nazi regime to pun on the biggest counterfeiter operation. Sally (not even called Salomon himself) ends up taking the role of the gild's leader and tries his best to keep everybody's desires at first. An ethical dilemma is brought up by Burger (another inmate) who wants to martyrise himself by sabotaging the whole operation arguing that it is better to die than to help the enemy. Tensions arise when Sally puts the case forward that an extra day is an extra day and that helping the enemy could bring them salvation. The ending is interesting, full of realisation for Sally, himself and his role in the world: a counterfeiter is a counterfeiter is a counterfeiter. You can't cheat the cheaters but there is some poetry on this too.
